¹ The word o= f the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezek= iah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

² Hear, you peoples, all of you,

&nb= sp; listen, O earth, and all that is in it.

the sovereig= n LORD will testify against you,

&nb= sp; the Lord from his holy temple.

³ Look, the = LORD is coming out of his place,

&nb= sp; and will come down and tread on the high places of the earth.=

⁴ The mounta= ins will melt under him,

&nb= sp; and the valleys will split open;

they will me= lt like wax before a fire,

&nb= sp; like waters that are poured down a steep place.

⁵ All this i= s a result of the transgression of Jacob,

&nb= sp; and for the sins of the house of Israel.

What is the transgression of Jacob?

&nb= sp; Is it not Samaria?

What is the high p= lace of Judah?

&nb= sp; Is it not Jerusalem?

⁶ Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of ruins in the field,

&nb= sp; a place for planting vineyards.

I will pour = down her stones into the valley,

&nb= sp; and I will expose her foundations.

⁷ All her gr= aven images will be beaten to pieces;

&nb= sp; all her pagan treasures will be burned with fire,

&nb= sp; = and all her idols I will lay waste.

For she gath= ered them as the hire of a prostitute,

&nb= sp; and to the prostitute's wages they will return.

⁸ For this I will lament and wail;

&nb= sp; I will walk around barefoot and naked;

I will howl = like the jackals,

&nb= sp; and a mourn like an owl.

⁹ For her wo= unds are incurable;

&nb= sp; it has come even to Judah.

It has reach= ed to the gate of my people,
&= nbsp; even to Jerusalem.

¹⁰ Tell it no= t in Gath,

&nb= sp; do not weep at all,

at Bet= h Leaphrah [House of Dust] roll in the dust.

¹¹ Pass into exile, O inhabitants of Shaphir [beautiful],

&nb= sp; in nakedness and shame.

The inhabita= nts of Zaanan dare not come out of their city;

&nb= sp; Beth Ezel wails and will remove its support from you.

¹² For the inhabitants of Maroth wait anxiously for good,

&nb= sp; because disaster has come down from the LORD

&nb= sp; = to the gate of Jerusalem.

¹³ Harness the chariot to the steeds, O inhabitants of Lachish;

&nb= sp; you were the first place of sin to the daughter of Zion,

&nb= sp; = for the transgressions of Israel were found in you.

¹⁴ Therefore = you will give farewell gifts to Moresheth-gath.

&nb= sp; The houses of Achzib [Deception] will be a deceitful thing

&nb= sp; = to the kings of Israel.

¹⁵ I will aga= in bring to you, O inhabitants of Mareshah,

&nb= sp; a conqueror who will possess you;

the glory of Israel will flee to Adullam.

¹⁶ Shave your heads bald,

&nb= sp; and cut off your hair for the children of your delight;

enlarge your baldness as the eagle,

&nb= sp; for they are taken from you into exile.

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity,

&nb= sp; who plot evil on their beds.

When the morning d= awns, they do it,

&nb= sp; because it is in the power of their hand.

² They covet fields, then seize them,

&nb= sp; and houses, and take them.

They cheat a person out of his house,

&nb= sp; even taking a person's family inheritance.

³ Therefore = this is what the LORD says:

&nb= sp; "Look, I am planning a disaster against this family,

&nb= sp; = from which you will not be able to remove your necks.

&nb= sp; You will no longer walk in arrogance,

&nb= sp; = for it will be a time of trouble.

⁴ In that da= y they will take up a taunt against you,

&nb= sp; and lament with a mournful lamentation, saying,

'We are utterly ru= ined!

&nb= sp; He changes the portion of my people.

How do= es he remove it from me!

&nb= sp; He allots our fields to traitors.'"

⁵ Therefore = you will have no one to mark out the boundaries by lot

&nb= sp; in the assembly of the LORD.

⁶ "Do not preach," they preach. <= o:p>

&nb= sp; "They should not prophesy about such things;

&nb= sp; = disgrace will not overtake us."

⁷ Should it = be said, O house of Jacob,
&= nbsp; "Is the Spirit of the LORD exhausted?

&nb= sp; = Are these his doings?"

&nb= sp; "Do not my words benefit him who walks uprightly?

⁸ But recent= ly my people rise up like an enemy;

&nb= sp; strip the robe off those who peacefully pass by,

&nb= sp; = like those returning from war.

⁹ You evict = the women of my people from their pleasant houses;

&nb= sp; from their young children you take away my glory forever.

¹⁰ Get up, an= d leave;

&nb= sp; for this is not your resting place,

becaus= e of uncleanness that destroys,

&nb= sp; with a terrible destruction.

¹¹ If a person were walking around uttering blustery lies, saying,

&nb= sp; 'I will prophesy to you of wine and of strong drink,'

he will be t= he perfect prophet for this people.

¹² I will sur= ely gather all of you, O Jacob;

&nb= sp; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel;

I will put them to= gether as the sheep

&nb= sp; in the midst of a pasture;

it will be noisy b= ecause there will be so many people.

¹³ The leader= who breaks out will go up before them,

&nb= sp; they will break out and pass on through the gate,

= and leave.

Their king w= ill pass on before them,

&nb= sp; and the LORD will be at their head."

¹ Then I said,

&nb= sp; "Listen, you heads of Jacob,

&nb= sp; = and rulers of the house of Israel,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; is it not your duty to know justice?

² But you hate the good, <= /span>

&nb= sp; and love evil;

you who tear= the skin off my people,

&nb= sp; and their flesh from off their bones;

³ who also eat the flesh of my people= ,

&nb= sp; flay their skin off of them,

&nb= sp; break their bones

&nb= sp; and chop them into pieces,

&nb= sp; = like flesh for the pot,

&nb= sp; = and meat for the kettle.

⁴ Then they = will cry to the LORD,

&nb= sp; but he will not answer them;

he will hide his f= ace from them at that time

&nb= sp; because of the evil they have done.

⁵ This is wh= at the LORD says:

&nb= sp; "The prophets who lead my people astray,

&nb= sp; = who cry 'Peace' whenever someone feeds their teeth,

&nb= sp; if someone does not feed their mouths,

&nb= sp; = they declare war against him.

⁶ Therefore night will fall on you,

&nb= sp; but you will have no vision;

it will be d= ark for you,

&nb= sp; with no revelations;

the sun will= go down on the prophets,

&nb= sp; and the day will be black over them.

⁷ The seers = will be disgraced

&nb= sp; and the diviners shamed;

they will all cover their lips

&nb= sp; for there will be no answer from God."

⁸ But as for me, I am filled with power,

&nb= sp; with the Spirit of the LORD,

with justice and s= trength,

&nb= sp; to declare to Jacob his rebellion,

&nb= sp; = and to Israel his sin.

⁹ Hear this,= you heads of the house of Jacob,

&nb= sp; and rulers of the house of Israel,

who ab= hor justice,

&nb= sp; and pervert everything that is straight.

¹⁰ They build= up Zion with blood,

&nb= sp; and Jerusalem with injustice.

¹¹ Her leaders judge for a bribe;

&nb= sp; her priests teach for hire,

&nb= sp; = and her prophets divine for money.

Yet they lean on t= he LORD, and say,

&nb= sp; "Is not the LORD among us?

&nb= sp; = No disaster will come on us."

¹² Therefore,= because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field;

&nb= sp; Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins,

&nb= sp; and the Temple Mount like a hill overgrown with brush.

¹ But in the last days the mountain of the = LORD's house

&nb= sp; will be established as the chief of the mountains,

and it will be lif= ted above the hills,

&nb= sp; and peoples will flow to it.

² Many natio= ns will come and say,

&nb= sp; "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,

&nb= sp; = and to the house of the God of Jacob.

&nb= sp; He will teach us his ways,

&nb= sp; = and we will walk in his paths."

&nb= sp; For the law will go forth out of Zion,

&nb= sp; = and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

³ He will ju= dge between many peoples,

&nb= sp; and will settle disputes of strong nations far away.

They will beat the= ir swords into plowshares,

&nb= sp; and their spears into pruning hooks.

Nation will not li= ft up sword against nation,

&nb= sp; nor will they learn war anymore.

⁴ But each person will sit under his own vine

&nb= sp; and under his fig tree,

and no one will ma= ke them afraid,

&nb= sp; for the mouth of LORD of hosts has promised it.

⁵ For all the peoples walk everyone in the name of their god;

&nb= sp; but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God forever and ever.

⁶ "In that day," says the LORD, <= br> &= nbsp; "I will assemble those who are lame,

&nb= sp; and I will gather those who were driven away,

&nb= sp; = those whom I afflicted.

⁷ I will mak= e the lame a remnant,

&nb= sp; and those who were cast off a strong nation.

The LORD will reign over them in Mount Zion

&nb= sp; from now and forever."

⁸ As for you= , O guard tower of the flock,

&nb= sp; the hill of the daughter of Zion,

to you it wi= ll come,

&nb= sp; the former dominion will come,

&nb= sp; = the kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem.

⁹ Now why do= you cry out so loud?

&nb= sp; Is there no king among you?

&nb= sp; Is your sage ruler perished?

&nb= sp; Is that why pangs have taken hold of you

&nb= sp; = like a woman in labor?

¹⁰ Writhe in = pain and groan, O daughter of Zion,

&nb= sp; like a woman in labor;

for now you must l= eave the city,

&nb= sp; and live in the open field,

&nb= sp; = and will go to Babylon.

There you will be rescued;

&nb= sp; there the LORD will redeem you

&nb= sp; = from the hand of your enemies.

¹¹ Now many nations are assembled against you.

&nb= sp; They say, "Let her be defiled,

&nb= sp; = and let our eye gloat over Zion."

¹² But they do not know the thoughts of the LORD,

&nb= sp; nor do they understand his plan;

for he has gathered them as the sheaves to the threshing floor.

¹³ "Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion;

&nb= sp; for I will make your horns iron,

and I will make = your hooves bronze.

So you will = beat into pieces many peoples."

&nb= sp; You will devote their stolen gain to the LORD,

&nb= sp; = and their wealth to the Lord of the whole earth.

¹ Now muster your troops, O daughter of tro= ops;

&nb= sp; they have laid a siege against us;

they w= ill strike the ruler of Israel
&= nbsp; with a rod on the cheek.

² But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,

&nb= sp; though you are little among the clans of Judah,

out of you w= ill come forth for me

&nb= sp; one who is to be ruler in Israel,

whose origin= is from of old, from ancient days.

³ So he will give them up,

&nb= sp; until the time she who is in labor has given birth.

Then the res= t of his brothers will return

&nb= sp; to the children of Israel.

⁴ He will st= and and will feed his flock

&nb= sp; in the strength of the LORD,

in the majes= ty of the name of the LORD his God.

&nb= sp; And they will be secure,

for at that time h= e will be great to the ends of the earth.

⁵ &= nbsp; And this one will be our peace.

If the Assyrians shoul= d come into our land

&nb= sp; and attempt to tread down our fortresses,

then we will= marshal seven shepherds against him,

&nb= sp; yes, eight commanders.

⁶ They will = rule the land of Assyria with the sword,

&nb= sp; and the land of Nimrod with a drawn sword.

He will deli= ver us from the Assyrians,

&nb= sp; when he comes into our land,

&nb= sp; = and when he tramples within our border.

⁷ Then the remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples

&nb= sp; like dew from the LORD,

like showers on the grass,

&nb= sp; = which no one can hold back,

&nb= sp; = or delay until humans are ready.

⁸ The remnan= t of Jacob will be among the nations,

&nb= sp; in the midst of many peoples,

like a lion among = the animals of the forest,

&nb= sp; like a young lion among the flocks of sheep,

who as it go= es through, pounces and rips in pieces,

&nb= sp; and there is no one to rescue.

⁹ Let your h= and be lifted up against your adversaries,

&nb= sp; and let all your enemies be cut off.

¹⁰ "In that day," says the LORD, <= o:p>

&nb= sp; "I will cut off your horses from your midst,

&nb= sp; = and will destroy your chariots.

¹¹ I will cut= off the cities of your land,

&nb= sp; and will throw down all your strongholds.

¹² I will cut= off sorcery from your hand,

&nb= sp; and there will be no more fortune-tellers.

¹³ I will cut= off your carved idols

&nb= sp; and your sacred pillars from your midst;

&nb= sp; you will no longer worship the work of your hands.

¹⁴ I will upr= oot your Asherah poles from your midst;

&nb= sp; I will destroy your cities.

¹⁵ I will exe= cute vengeance in anger and wrath

&nb= sp; upon the nations that have disobeyed."&nbs= p;

¹ Listen to what the LORD says: =

&nb= sp; "Get up, plead your case before the mountains,

&nb= sp; = and let the hills hear your voice.

² Hear, O mountains, the LORD's indictment,

&nb= sp; and you enduring foundations of the earth.

For the LORD= has a controversy with his people,

&nb= sp; and he will bring a charge against Israel.

³ O my peopl= e, what have I done to you?

&nb= sp; How have I wearied you?

&nb= sp; = Answer me.

⁴ For I brou= ght you up out of the land of Egypt,

&nb= sp; redeemed you out of the house of bondage;

&nb= sp; = I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam before you.

⁵ O my peopl= e, remember now what Balak king of Moab plotted,

&nb= sp; and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him.

Remember what happ= ened from Shittim to Gilgal,

&nb= sp; that you may know the righteous acts of the LORD."

⁶ With what = shall I come before the LORD,

&nb= sp; and bow myself before God on high?

Shall I come befor= e him with burnt offerings,

&nb= sp; with year-old calves?

⁷ Will the L= ORD be pleased with thousands of rams,

&nb= sp; or with ten thousand rivers of olive oil?

Shall I give him my firstborn for my transgression,

&nb= sp; the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

⁸ He has sho= wed you, O man, what is good.

What does the LORD require of you?

To do justice, <= o:p>

&nb= sp; = to love faithfulness,

&nb= sp; = &= nbsp; and to walk humbly with your God.

⁹ The voice of the LORD cries to the city. =

&nb= sp; It is wisdom to fear your name:

"= Listen, to the rod and the one who has appointed it.

¹⁰ Can I over= look the treasures of wickedness
&= nbsp; &nbs= p; in the house of the wicked,

&nb= sp; and the dishonest weights used in trading is accursed?

¹¹ Can I acqu= it the person with rigged scales,

&nb= sp; and with a bag of dishonest weights?

¹² For the ri= ch of your city are full of violence,

&nb= sp; and its inhabitants tell lies,

and their to= ngues speak deceit from their mouths.

¹³ Therefore = I will strike you with a serious wound;

&nb= sp; I will make you desolate because of your sins.

¹⁴ You will e= at, but not be satisfied;

&nb= sp; hunger will be in your midst.

What you sto= re away, will not be saved;

&nb= sp; what you do manage to save,

&nb= sp; = I will give over to the sword.

¹⁵ You will s= ow,

&nb= sp; but not reap;

you will tre= ad the olives,

&nb= sp; but not anoint yourself with olive oil;

you will tre= ad grapes,

&nb= sp; but not drink the wine.

¹⁶ For you ke= ep the statutes of King Omri,

&nb= sp; and follow all the practices of the house of Ahab,

= and you walk according to their principles.

Therefore I will m= ake you an utter ruin,

&nb= sp; and your inhabitants an object of mockery,

&nb= sp; = and the nations will ridicule you."

¹ Woe is me!

&nb= sp; For I am as one after the summer fruit has been gathered,

&nb= sp; = after the grapes have been harvested;

&nb= sp; when there is no cluster left to eat,

&nb= sp; = no early fig that I crave.

² The faithf= ul have perished from the land,

&nb= sp; and there is no one upright left.

They all set an am= bush for bloodshed;

&nb= sp; every one hunts his brother with a net.

³ Their hands are skilled at doing evil;

&nb= sp; the officials and judge ask for a bribe.

The prominen= t ones make their demands,

&nb= sp; thus they weave their plots together.

⁴ The best of them is like a brier;

&nb= sp; the most upright is worse than a hedge of thorns.

The day of your wa= tchmen, even your punishment, is come;

&nb= sp; now their confusion has arrived.

⁵ Do not tru= st a neighbor;

&nb= sp; do not put confidence in a friend.

Guard the do= ors of your mouth
&= nbsp; even from her who lies in your arms.

⁶ For the son disrespects his father,

&nb= sp; the daughter rises up against her mother,

&nb= sp; the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law,

one's enemies are the members of their own household.

⁷ But as for me, I will look to the LORD; <= o:p>

&nb= sp; I will wait for the God of my salvation.

&nb= sp; = My God will hear me.

⁸ Do not glo= at over me, O my enemy.

&nb= sp; When I fall,

&nb= sp; = I will arise;

&nb= sp; when I sit in darkness,

&nb= sp; = the LORD will be my light.

⁹ I must bear the LORD's anger,

&nb= sp; because I have sinned against him,

until he ple= ads my cause,

&nb= sp; and executes judgment for me.

He will brin= g me out into the light,

&nb= sp; and I will see his righteousness.

¹⁰ Then my en= emy will see it,

&nb= sp; and shame will cover her who said to me,
"Where is t= he LORD your God?"

&nb= sp; My eyes will see her demise.

&nb= sp; Now she will be trampled like mud in the streets.

¹¹ It's A day= for building your walls!

&nb= sp; In that day your boundary will be expanded.

¹² In that da= y people will come to you

&nb= sp; from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,

&nb= sp; and from Egypt even to the Euphrates River,

= and from sea to sea,

&nb= sp; and from mountain to mountain.

¹³ Yet the la= nd will be desolate because of its inhabitants,

&nb= sp; because of the fruit of their deeds.

¹⁴ Feed your people with your rod,

&nb= sp; the flock of your inheritance,

which live alone i= n the forest

&nb= sp; in the midst of Mount Carmel.

Let them fee= d in Bashan and Gilead,

&nb= sp; as in the days of old.

¹⁵ "As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt,

&nb= sp; I will show them marvelous things."

¹⁶ The nations will see and be ashamed of all their might;
they will lay their hand over their mouths;

&nb= sp; = their ears will be deaf.

¹⁷ They will = lick the dust like a serpent,

&nb= sp; like things that crawl on the ground.

They will co= me trembling out of their fortresses;

&nb= sp; they will come with fear to the LORD our God,

&nb= sp; = and will be afraid of you.

¹⁸ Who is a G= od like you, that pardons iniquity,

&nb= sp; and passes over the transgression
&= nbsp; &nbs= p; of the remnant of his possession?

He does not = remain angry forever,

&nb= sp; because he delights in loyal love.

¹⁹ He will ag= ain have compassion upon us;

&nb= sp; he will tread our iniquities under foot.

You will cas= t all their sins into the depths of the sea.

²⁰ You will s= how faithfulness to Jacob,

&nb= sp; and loyal love to Abraham,

which you ha= ve sworn to our fathers from the days of old.
