1 The vision= of Obadiah.

   This is what the sovereign LORD says concerning Edom:

      &nb= sp;     "We have heard tidings from the LORD,

      &nb= sp;            =      and a messenger has been sent among the nations:

      &nb= sp;     'Rise up, let us rise up against her for battle.'

2 Look, I wi= ll make you small among the nations;

      &nb= sp;     you will be greatly despised.

3 The pride = of your heart has deceived you,

      &nb= sp;     O you who live in the clefts of the rock,

      &nb= sp;            =      whose home is on the heights of the mountains,

      &nb= sp;     who boasts in his heart,

      &nb= sp;            =      'Who can bring me down to the ground?'

4 Though you= soar high as an eagle,

      &nb= sp;     and though you set your nest among the stars,

            &= nbsp;           fr= om there I will bring you down,"

      &nb= sp;            =             &nb= sp;            =             &nb= sp;            =             &nb= sp;  says the LORD.

 

5 "If thieves came to you,

      &nb= sp;     if robbers by night,

      &nb= sp;            =      O how you will be destroyed!

      &nb= sp;     Would they not steal until they had enough?

      &nb= sp;     If grape gatherers came to you,

      &nb= sp;            =      would they not leave a few grapes?

6 How the descendants of Esau will be plundered!

      &nb= sp;     How his hidden treasures will be searched out!

7 All your allies will drive you to your border.

    Those who we= re at peace with you will deceive you,

      &nb= sp;     and will prevail against you.

    Those who at= e your bread will set a trap under you,

      &nb= sp;     but you will be totally unaware of it.


8 "Will I not in that day," says = the LORD,

      &nb= sp;     "destroy the wise men out of Edom,

      &nb= sp;     and understanding out of the Mount of Esau?

9 Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be afraid,

      &nb= sp;     to the end that everyone will be cut off

      &nb= sp;            =      from the Mount of Esau by slaughter.

10 Because of= the violence done to your brother Jacob,

      &nb= sp;     shame will cover you,

      &nb= sp;            =      and you will be cut off forever.

11 On the day= you stood by when strangers carried off his wealth,

      &nb= sp;     and foreigners entered into his gates,

      &nb= sp;            =      and cast lots on Jerusalem,

      &nb= sp;     you were just like one of them.

12 But you sh= ould not have gloated over your brother

      &nb= sp;     in the day of his disaster.

    You should n= ot have rejoiced over the children of Judah

      &nb= sp;     in the day of their destruction.

    You should n= ot have spoken arrogantly

      &nb= sp;     on the day of distress.

13 You should= not have entered into the gate of my people

      &nb= sp;     in the day of their calamity.

     You sh= ould not have gloated over their misfortune

      &nb= sp;     in the day of their calamity.

     You sh= ould not have laid hands on their substance

      &nb= sp;     in the day of their calamity.

14 You should= not have stood at the crossways,

      &nb= sp;     to cut down those trying to escape.

     You sh= ould not have handed over those who survived

      &nb= sp;     in the day of distress.


15 For the day of the LORD is near on all the nations;

      &nb= sp;     as you have done, it will be done to you;

     your d= eeds will return back on your own head.

16 Just as you have drunk on my holy mountain,

      &nb= sp;     so will all the nations drink continually;

    they will dr= ink, and gulp down,

      &nb= sp;     and will be as though they had never been.

17 But in Mou= nt Zion there will be those who escape,

      &nb= sp;     and it will be holy;

     the ho= use of Jacob will regain its inheritance.

18 The house = of Jacob will be a fire,

      &nb= sp;     and the house of Joseph a flame,

            but the house of Esau stubble.

    They will bu= rn them up and devour them.

            There will not be a sole survivor of the house of Esau," <= /p>

      &nb= sp;             &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;  for the LORD has spoken it.


19 Those of the Negev will possess the mount= ain of Esau,

      &nb= sp;     and those of the Judean foothills the Philistines.

   They will possess = the lands of Ephraim,

      &nb= sp;     and the lands of Samaria.

      &nb= sp;            =      Benjamin will possess Gilead.

20 This group= of exiles from the descendants of Israel,

      &nb= sp;     who are among the Canaanites,

      &nb= sp;            =      will possess all the way to Zarephath.

     The ca= ptives of Jerusalem,

      &nb= sp;     who are in Sepharad,

      &nb= sp;            =      will possess the towns of the Negev.

21 Saviors wi= ll ascend Mount Zion to judge the Mount of Esau,

      &nb= sp;     and the kingdom will be the LORD's.
