¹ The vision= of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

² Listen, O heavens, hear, O earth,

&nb= sp; for the LORD has spoken:

"I have reared children and brought them up,

&nb= sp; but they have rebelled against me.

³ The ox kno= ws its owner,

&nb= sp; and the donkey its master's feeding trough,

but Israel d= oes not know,

&nb= sp; my people do not consider."

⁴ O sinful nation,

&nb= sp; a people loaded down with iniquity,

an offspring= of evildoers,

&nb= sp; children who act corruptly!

They have forsaken= the LORD;

&nb= sp; they have despised the Holy One of Israel;

&nb= sp; = they have turned their backs on him.

⁵ Why should= you be beaten anymore?

&nb= sp; Why do you just rebel more and more?

The whole he= ad is sick,

&nb= sp; and the whole heart faint.

⁶ From the s= ole of the foot to the top of the head

&nb= sp; there is nowhere that is undamaged in it.

There are wounds, = welts, and open sores;

&nb= sp; they have not been cleansed,

&nb= sp; = or bandaged up,

&nb= sp; = or softened with olive oil.

⁷ Your country is desolate;

&nb= sp; your cities are burned with fire;

foreig= ners are devouring your land right in front of you,

&nb= sp; and it is desolate, as when overthrown by foreigners.

⁸ The daught= er of Zion is left like a hut in a vineyard,

&nb= sp; like a watchman's shelter in a field of cucumbers,

&nb= sp; = like a besieged city.

⁹ Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a few survivors,

&nb= sp; we would have been like Sodom,

&nb= sp; we would have become like Gomorrah.

¹⁰ Listen to = the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom;

&nb= sp; hear the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah.

¹¹ "What= do your many sacrifices mean to me?" says the LORD.

&nb= sp; "I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams,

&nb= sp; = and the fat of well fed cattle;

I deli= ght not in the blood of bulls, lambs, and goats.

¹² When you c= ome to appear before me,

&nb= sp; who has required this from your hand,

&nb= sp; = this trampling of my courts?

¹³ Do not bri= ng any more worthless offerings;

&nb= sp; your incense is detestable to me.

New moons an= d Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies,

&nb= sp; -- I cannot stand such sinful assemblies.

¹⁴ Your new m= oons and your appointed feasts I hate;

&nb= sp; they have become a burden to me;

&nb= sp; = I am tired of putting up with them.

¹⁵ When you spread out your hands,

&nb= sp; I will hide my eyes from you.

Yes, when yo= u make many prayers,

&nb= sp; I will not listen,

for yo= ur hands are full of blood.

¹⁶ Wash yours= elves,

&nb= sp; make yourselves clean;

put aw= ay the evil deeds from before my eyes;

&nb= sp; stop doing evil.

¹⁷ Learn to d= o good.

&nb= sp; Seek justice,

&nb= sp; = rescue the oppressed,

&nb= sp; = defend the orphan,

&nb= sp; = plead for the widow."

¹⁸ "Come now, and let us reason togethe= r," says the LORD.

&nb= sp; "Though your sins are like scarlet,

&nb= sp; = they shall be as white as snow;

&nb= sp; though they are red like crimson,

&nb= sp; = they shall be like wool.

¹⁹ If you are willing and obedient,

&nb= sp; you will eat the good of the land.

²⁰ But if you refuse and rebel,

&nb= sp; you will be devoured with the sword,"

&nb= sp; = for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.

²¹ How the faithful city has become a whore!=

&nb= sp; She was once full of justice,

&nb= sp; = righteousness inhabited her,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; but now only murderers.

²² Your silve= r has become dross,

&nb= sp; your wine diluted with water.

²³ Your princ= es are rebellious,

&nb= sp; and companions of thieves.

Everyo= ne loves bribes,

&nb= sp; and chases after payoffs.

They r= efuse to defend the orphan,

&nb= sp; and the widow's cause does not come before them.

²⁴ Therefore = the Lord, the LORD of hosts,

&nb= sp; the Mighty One of Israel, says,

"I will take vengea= nce on my enemies,

&nb= sp; and avenge myself on my foes.

²⁵ I will tur= n my hand on you,

&nb= sp; and skim off your dross,

&nb= sp; = and will remove all your impurities.

²⁶ I will res= tore your judges as at the first,

&nb= sp; and your counselors as at the beginning.

Afterward yo= u will be called,

&nb= sp; 'the City of Righteousness,'

&nb= sp; 'a Faithful Town.'

²⁷ Zion will = be redeemed with justice,

&nb= sp; and her repentant ones with righteousness.

²⁸ But the re= bellious and sinners will be crushed,

&nb= sp; and those who forsake the LORD will be consumed.

²⁹ For you will be ashamed of the sacred oak= s

&nb= sp; in which you delighted,

and yo= u will be embarrassed for the gardens

&nb= sp; that you have chosen.

³⁰ For you wi= ll be like an oak whose leaf withers,

&nb= sp; and like a garden that has no water.

³¹ The strong= will be like tinder,

&nb= sp; and his work like a spark.

They will bo= th burn together,

&nb= sp; with no one able to extinguish the fire."

¹ The message that Isaiah the son of Amoz s= aw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

² In the latter days,
the mounta= in of the LORD's house will be established

&nb= sp; as the highest of the mountains;

it will be exalted= above the hills,

&nb= sp; and all nations will flow unto it.

³ Many peopl= es will come and say,

&nb= sp; "Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,

&nb= sp; = to the house of the God of Jacob.

&nb= sp; He will teach us of his ways,

&nb= sp; = and we will walk in his paths."

For out of Z= ion the law will go forth,

&nb= sp; and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

⁴ He will ju= dge between the nations,

&nb= sp; and will settle disputes for many peoples.

They will beat the= ir swords into plowshares,

&nb= sp; and their spears into pruning hooks.

Nation will = not lift up sword against nation;

&nb= sp; they will not train for war anymore.

⁵ O house of Jacob, come,

&nb= sp; let us walk in the light of the LORD.

⁶ For you have rejected your people, the ho= use of Jacob,

&nb= sp; because they are filled with fortunetellers from the east,

&nb= sp; &= nbsp; and soothsayers like the Philistines,

&nb= sp; &= nbsp; and they shake hands in agreement with foreigners.

⁷ Their land= is full of silver and gold;

&nb= sp; there is no end to their treasures.

Their land i= s full of horses;

&nb= sp; there is no end of their chariots.

⁸ Their land also is full of idols;

&nb= sp; they worship the work of their own hands,

&nb= sp; = that which their own fingers have made.

⁹ So the peo= ple are humbled,

&nb= sp; each one is brought low.

&nb= sp; = Do not forgive them.

¹⁰ Enter into the rock,

&nb= sp; and hide in the dust

from t= he terror of the LORD

&nb= sp; and from the glory of his majesty.

¹¹ The arroga= nt looks of humans will be brought low,

&nb= sp; and the haughtiness of people will be humbled,

&nb= sp; and the LORD alone will be exalted in that day.

¹² For there = will be a day of the LORD of hosts

&nb= sp; against all the proud and haughty,

and against all that is lifted up,

&nb= sp; = and they will be brought low,

¹³ against all the cedars of Lebanon,

&nb= sp; that are high and lifted up,

agains= t all the oaks of Bashan,

¹⁴ against all the high mountains,

&nb= sp; against all the high hills,

¹⁵ against every lofty tower,

&nb= sp; against every fortified wall,

¹⁶ against all the ships of Tarshish, =

&nb= sp; and against every beautiful boat.

¹⁷ People's p= ride will be humbled,

&nb= sp; and human haughtiness will be brought low;

the LORD alo= ne will be exalted in that day.

¹⁸ Idols will= completely vanish.

¹⁹ They will enter the caves of the rocks

&nb= sp; and into the holes in the ground

from the ter= ror of LORD

&nb= sp; and from the glory of his majesty,

when he arises to terrify the earth.

²⁰ In that da= y people will throw away their idols of silver,

&nb= sp; and their idols of gold,

which they m= ade for themselves to worship,

&nb= sp; to the moles and to the bats.

²¹ They will enter the caverns of the = rocks,

&nb= sp; and into the crevices of the rocky cliffs,

from t= he terror of the LORD

&nb= sp; and from the glory of his majesty,

= when he arises to terrify the earth.

²² Stop trust= ing in human beings,

&nb= sp; whose breath is in their nostrils.

For why woul= d you even give them a thought?

¹ For look, = the sovereign LORD of hosts,

&nb= sp; is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah

&nb= sp; = support and supply,

&nb= sp; every piece of bread and drop of water,

² the mighty= man and the warrior,

&nb= sp; the judge and the prophet,

&nb= sp; = the diviner and the elder,

³ the captai= n of fifty and the honorable person,

&nb= sp; the counselor and the expert craftsman,

&nb= sp; = and the skilful enchanter.

⁴ I will make the young to be their princes= ,

&nb= sp; and infants will rule over them.

⁵ The people= will be oppressed,

&nb= sp; everyone by another,

&nb= sp; = and everyone by his neighbor.

The young will beh= ave proudly against the old,

&nb= sp; and the base against the honorable.

⁶ A person w= ill even grab hold of his brother
in his fat= her's house, saying,

&nb= sp; "You have clothing,

&nb= sp; = come you be our ruler,

&nb= sp; = and let this ruin be under your rule."

⁷ In that da= y he will cry out,

&nb= sp; "I cannot cure this;

&= nbsp; for there is neither bread or clothing in my house,

&nb= sp; you must not make me ruler of the people."

⁸ For Jerusalem has stumbled,

&nb= sp; and Judah has fallen;

because thei= r words and their deeds are against the LORD,

&nb= sp; defying his glorious watchfulness.

⁹ The look on their face witnesses against them;

&nb= sp; they flaunt their sin like Sodom;

&nb= sp; = they do not hide it.

Woe to= their soul!

&nb= sp; They have brought disaster on themselves.

¹⁰ Tell the righteous, that it will go well with them,

&nb= sp; for they will eat the fruit of their labors.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked! Disaster!

&nb= sp; For exactly what their hands have done

&nb= sp; = will be done back to them.

¹² As for my people, children oppress them, =

&nb= sp; women rule over them.

O my p= eople, those leading you mislead you,

&nb= sp; and confuse the direction of your paths.

¹³ The LORD r= ises to make the accusation;

&nb= sp; he stands to judge the peoples.

¹⁴ The LORD c= omes to pronounce judgment on the elders

&nb= sp; and on the princes of his people.

"= It is you who have ruined the vineyard;

&nb= sp; the plunder stolen from the poor is in your houses.

¹⁵ Why do you crush my people,

&nb= sp; and grind the faces of the poor?"

&nb= sp; = says the sovereign LORD of hosts.

¹⁶ The LORD says, "The daughters of Zion are haughty,

&nb= sp; and walk with outstretched necks and seductive eyes,

&nb= sp; walking with dainty little steps as they go,

&nb= sp; = and jingling with their feet.

¹⁷ Therefore = the Lord will strike with scabs

&nb= sp; the top of the head of the daughters of Zion,

and the LORD= will make them bald."

¹⁸ In that day the Lord will take away their beautiful anklets,

&nb= sp; the headbands, and the crescent necklaces,

¹⁹ the earrin= gs, bracelets, and veils,

²⁰ the headdr= esses, the ankle bracelets, the sashes,

&nb= sp; the perfume boxes, and amulets,

²¹ the rings = and nose rings,

²² the party = dresses, robes, shawls and purses,

²³ the hand m= irrors, fine linen garments,

&nb= sp; the turbans and shawls.

²⁴ Instead of sweet perfumes there will be a= rotten stench;

&nb= sp; and instead of a sash, a rope;

instead of a beaut= iful hairdo, baldness;

&nb= sp; instead of a rich robe, sackcloth;

&nb= sp; = a slave branding instead of beauty.

²⁵ Your men w= ill fall by the sword,

&nb= sp; and your warriors in the war.

²⁶ Her gates = will lament and mourn;

&nb= sp; deserted she will sit on the ground. <= br>

= &nb= sp; = DASV: Isaiah 4

¹ Seven wome= n will take hold of one man in that day, saying, "We will eat our own food, a= nd wear our own clothes, just let us be called by your name; take away our sha= me."

² In that day the branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and beauty of the survivors of Israel.

³ Anyone who= is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who is recorded as among those living in Jerusalem.

⁴ Then the L= ord will wash away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and will purge the bloodstain= s of Jerusalem from its midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of fi= re.

⁵ The LORD w= ill create over the entirety of Mount Zion, and over her sites of assembly, a c= loud and smoke by day, and a glowing flaming fire by night; over all the glory w= ill be a canopy.

⁶ There will= be a shelter for shade in the day from the heat, and a refuge and a shelter fr= om the storm and rain.

¹ Let me sing for my beloved

&nb= sp; a song about his vineyard.

My beloved had a vineyard

&nb= sp; on a very fertile hill.

² He cultiva= ted it, cleared out its stones,

&nb= sp; and planted it with the choicest vine.

He built a tower i= n the midst of it,

&nb= sp; and also hewed out a winepress in it.

He expected that i= t would produce grapes,

&nb= sp; but it yielded only sour grapes.

³ Now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem

&nb= sp; and people of Judah,

judge betwee= n me and my vineyard.

⁴ What more = could I have done to my vineyard

&nb= sp; than I have not already done for it?

When I expected th= at it would produce grapes,

&nb= sp; why did it yield only sour grapes?

⁵ Now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard:

&nb= sp; I will take away its hedge,

&nb= sp; = and it will be eaten up;

&nb= sp; I will break down its wall,

&nb= sp; = and it will be trampled down.

⁶ I will mak= e it a wasteland;

&nb= sp; it will not be pruned or hoed;

&nb= sp; = instead, briers and thorns will come up.

I will= also command the clouds

&nb= sp; that they not shower any rain on it.

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel,

&nb= sp; and the people of Judah is his cherished plant.

He exp= ected justice,

&nb= sp; but got only oppression;

= hoped for righteousness,

&nb= sp; but heard only cries for help.

⁸ Woe to those who accumulate house after house,

&nb= sp; that acquire field after field

&nb= sp; = until there is no room left,

until you ar= e left to dwell alone in the midst of the land!

⁹ In my ears= the LORD of hosts said,

&nb= sp; "Of a truth many houses will be desolate,

&nb= sp; = even large and beautiful mansions

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; will be left without inhabitant."

¹⁰ For ten ac= res of vineyard will produce only six gallons of wine,

&nb= sp; and six bushels of seed will produce less than a bushel of grain.

¹¹ Woe to tho= se who rise up early in the morning

&nb= sp; so that they may pursue strong drink;

who stay up late into the ni= ght,

&nb= sp; until they are inflamed with wine!

¹² Their part= ies have the harp and lute,

&nb= sp; the tambourine, flute, and wine.

They have no respe= ct for the deeds of the LORD,

&nb= sp; or consider the work of his hands.

¹³ Therefore = my people will go into exile

&nb= sp; for lack of knowledge;

their = nobles will lack food,

&nb= sp; and their crowds parched with thirst.

¹⁴ Therefore Sheol has enlarged its throat

&nb= sp; and opened its mouth without limit.

Their famous= ones and their multitude, &n= bsp;

&nb= sp; with their boisterous revelers will descend into it.

¹⁵ Each person will be on their face,

&nb= sp; each one brought down,

&nb= sp; = and the haughty eyes humbled.

¹⁶ But the LO= RD of hosts will be exalted by justice,

&nb= sp; and God the Holy One will demonstrate his holiness

&nb= sp; = by righteousness.

¹⁷ Then will = the lambs feed as in their own pasture,

&nb= sp; and the fatlings graze among the ruins.

¹⁸ Woe to those who drag iniquity with cords= of falsehood,

&nb= sp; and sin along like with a cart rope.

¹⁹ Who say, &= quot;Make him hurry up,

&nb= sp; let him do his work quickly,

&nb= sp; = so that we may see it.

Let th= e plan of the Holy One of Israel happen soon,

&nb= sp; &= nbsp; so that we may experience it!"

²⁰ Woe to tho= se who call evil good,

&nb= sp; and good evil;

who turn dar= kness to light,

&nb= sp; and light to darkness;

who swap bit= ter for sweet,

&nb= sp; and sweet for bitter!

²¹ Woe to tho= se who are wise in their own eyes,

&nb= sp; and shrewd in their own sight!

²² Woe to tho= se who are champions at drinking wine,
&= nbsp; and valiant at mixing strong drinks,

²³ who acquit= the guilty for a bribe,

&nb= sp; and deny the innocent justice!

²⁴ Therefore, just as the tongue of fire dev= ours straw,

&nb= sp; and as the dry grass shrivels in the flame,

so their root will= become rotten

&nb= sp; and their blossom will blow away like dust,

because they have rejected t= he law of the LORD of hosts,

&nb= sp; and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

²⁵ Therefore = the anger of the LORD burns against his people;

&nb= sp; he has stretched out his hand against them,

&nb= sp; = and has struck them.

The mountains tremble,

&nb= sp; and their corpses are strewn like garbage in the streets.

After all th= is, his anger is not turned away,

&nb= sp; but his hand is still stretched out.

²⁶ He will se= nd the signal to a distant nation,

&nb= sp; and will whistle for them to come from the ends of the earth.

Look, they c= ome with speed and swiftness.

²⁷ None of th= em are tired or stumble;

&nb= sp; none will slumber or sleep;

not a = belt will be loosed,

&nb= sp; not a thong of their sandals will be broken.

²⁸ Their arro= ws are sharp,

&nb= sp; and all their bows bent.

Their horses' hoofs are like flint,

&nb= sp; and their wheels like a whirlwind.

²⁹ Their roar= ing is like a lion,

&nb= sp; they roar like young lions.

They g= rowl, seize their prey,

&nb= sp; and haul it off,

&nb= sp; = and there is no one to rescue.

³⁰ They will = roar over them in that day

&nb= sp; like the roaring of the sea.

If one looks at the land,

&nb= sp; there is darkness and distress;

&= nbsp; ev= en the light is darkened by clouds.

¹ In the year that king Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifte= d up, and the train of his robe filled the temple.

² Above him stood the seraphim, each one had six wings: with two they covered their fac= es, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.=

³ They called out to each other,

&nb= sp; "Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts;

&nb= sp; = the whole earth is full of his glory!"

⁴ At the sou= nd of their cry the door frames shook, and the temple was filled with smoke.

⁵ Then said = I, "Woe is me! For I am doomed; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live in the m= idst of a people of unclean lips. My eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.= "

⁶ Then a seraphim flew to me, having a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken = with the tongs from the altar.

⁷ He touched= my mouth with it, and said,

&nb= sp; "Look, this has touched your lips;

&nb= sp; = your iniquity is taken away,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; and your sin forgiven."

⁸ Then I heard the voice of the Lord, sayin= g,

&nb= sp; "Whom will I send,

&nb= sp; and who will go for us?"

I replied, "I= am here. Send me."

⁹ He said, &= quot;Go, and tell this people:

&nb= sp; Keep on listening, but do not understand;

&nb= sp; = keep on looking, but do not perceive.

¹⁰ Make the h= eart of this people insensitive,

&nb= sp; and make their ears deaf,

&nb= sp; = and shut their eyes;

&nb= sp; so that they may not s= ee with their eyes,

&nb= sp; and hear with their ears,

and understand with their heart,

and = repent and be healed."

¹¹ Then I asked, "Lord, how long?"= He answered,

&nb= sp; "Until cities are destroyed without inhabitant,

&nb= sp; = and houses uninhabited,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; and the land become absolutely devastated,

¹² and the LORD has sent everyone far away,

&nb= sp; = and the midst of the land is abandoned.

¹³ Even if a tenth remains in it,

&nb= sp; = it will be destroyed again.

&nb= sp; Just like a terebinth and an oak whose stump remains

&nb= sp; = when they are cut down;

&nb= sp; so the holy seed will be its stump.

¹ In the day= s of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, King Rezin of Ara= m, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to attack Jerusalem,= but could not prevail against it.

² It was rep= orted to the house of David, "Syria has allied itself with Ephraim." His heart and the heart of his people were shaken, as the trees of the forest tremble in the wind.

³ Then the L= ORD said to Isaiah, "Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub [a remnant will return], at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the r= oad to the Laundry Washing Field.

⁴ Tell him, = 'Be careful, be quiet, and don't be afraid. Do not be timid, because of these t= wo stubs of smoldering sticks, because of the fierce anger of Rezin, Aram, and the s= on of Remaliah.

⁵ Aram, Ephr= aim, and the son of Remaliah, have planned evil against you, saying,<= /span>

⁶ "Let = us go up against Judah, terrorize it, and rip it apart and divide it up for ou= rselves. Let us set up a king, the son of T= abeel, over it."'

⁷ This is wh= at the sovereign LORD says:

&nb= sp; "It will not stand,

&nb= sp; = and it will not happen,

⁸ &= nbsp; for the head of Aram is Damascus,

&nb= sp; = and the head of Damascus is Rezin.

&nb= sp; Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered in pieces,

&nb= sp; = so that it will not be a people.

⁹ &= nbsp; The head of Ephraim is Samaria,

&nb= sp; = and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son.

&nb= sp; If you will not faithfully stand firm,

&nb= sp; = then you will not stand at all."

¹⁰ Again the = LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying,

¹¹ "Requ= est a sign from the LORD your God; ask it either in the depths of Sheol, or in = the height of heaven."

¹² But Ahaz s= aid, "I will not ask. I will not test the LORD."

¹³ Then Isaiah said, "Listen now, O house of David. Is it too small a thing for you t= ry the patience of humans, that you want to try the patience of my God too?

¹⁴ Therefore = the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, a virgin will conceive, and give b= irth to a son, and you will call him Immanuel [God with us].

¹⁵ He will eat curds and honey when he knows enough to refuse the evil, and choose the goo= d.

¹⁶ For before= the child knows to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land whose two kin= gs you dread will be deserted.

¹⁷ The LORD w= ill bring on you, your people, and your father's house days that have never been since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah -- the king of Assyria.=

¹⁸ In that da= y, the LORD will whistle for the flies from the remotest part of the rivers of Egy= pt and for the bees from the land of Assyria.

¹⁹ They will come, and will settle in the ravines between cliffs and in the crevices of = the rocks, and on all thorn bushes and at all the watering holes.

²⁰ In that day the Lord will shave with a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River-- with the king of Assyria--the hea= d and leg hair; along with the beard too.

²¹ In that da= y, a man will keep alive a young cow and a couple goats.

²² From the abundance of milk they will produce he will eat curds; for everyone left in= the land will eat curds and honey.

²³ In that da= y every place where there used to be a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels, it = will be overgrown with briers and thorns.

²⁴ With bow a= nd arrows one will hunt there, because all the land will be full of briers and thorns= .

²⁵ All the hi= lls that used to be dug with a hoe, you will not go there for fear of briers and thorns. It will be a place for cattle to graze and for sheep to trample.

¹ Then the L= ORD said to me, "Take a large tablet, and inscribe on it with an ordinary stylus: Belonging to Maher-sh= alal-hash-baz [quick to the plunder, swift to the spoil].

² I will hav= e it verified by faithful witnesses, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah."

³ So I had relations with the prophetess, and she conceived, and bore a son. Then the = LORD said to me, "Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz."

⁴ For before= the child knows to cry, 'My father,' and, 'My mother,' the riches of Damascus a= nd the spoil of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria."=

⁵ Then the LORD spoke to me again, saying,<= o:p>

⁶ &= nbsp; "Because this people has refused

&nb= sp; = the gently flowing waters of Shiloah,

&nb= sp; and rejoices over what will happen

&nb= sp; = to Rezin and Remaliah's son,

⁷ &= nbsp; therefore the Lord will bring up against them

&nb= sp; = the strong floodwaters of the Euphrates River,

&nb= sp; = the king of Assyria and all his glory. <= /span>

&nb= sp; It will overflow all its channels,

&nb= sp; = and overrun all its banks.

⁸ &= nbsp; It will sweep on into Judah,

&nb= sp; = flooding and pouring through.

&nb= sp; It will reach even to the neck,

&nb= sp; = and the stretching out of its wings

&nb= sp; = filling the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.

⁹ &nb= sp; Be broken, O nations,

&nb= sp; = and be shattered in pieces. =

&nb= sp; Listen all you distant countries.

&nb= sp; = Gear up for battle,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; but you will be shattered;

&nb= sp; = gear up for battle,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; but you will be shattered.

¹⁰ Devise a plan,

&nb= sp; = but it will achieve nothing.

&nb= sp; Issue orders,

&nb= sp; = but they will never happen,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; for God is with us."

¹¹ For the LO= RD told me this with a strong hand, and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

¹² "Do not make allegation of a conspiracy;

&nb= sp; = concerning everything this people calls a conspiracy,

&nb= sp; do not be afraid of what they fear,

&nb= sp; = or be in dread of it.

¹³ The LORD of hosts is the one you must recognize as holy,

&nb= sp; = and let him be your fear,

&nb= sp; = and let him be your dread.

¹⁴ He will be a sanctuary;

&nb= sp; = a rock one trips over

&nb= sp; = and a stone of stumbling

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; for both the houses of Israel.

&nb= sp; He will be a trap

&nb= sp; = and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

¹⁵ Many will stumble over them.

&nb= sp; = They will fall and be broken,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; snared and taken captive."
¹⁶ &nbs= p; Bind up the testimony,

&nb= sp; = seal the teaching among my disciples.

¹⁷ I will wait expectantly for the LORD,

&nb= sp; = who hides his face from the house of Jacob,

&nb= sp; = &nb= sp; but I will put my hope in him.

¹⁸ Look, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are for signs and harbingers in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.

¹⁹ When they = say to you, "Consult with mediums and spiritists, who chirp and mutter,&qu= ot;

should not a people consult with their God? Should they really ask the = dead on behalf of the living?

²⁰ Rather con= sult the law and the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, sur= ely there is no dawn for them.

²¹ They will = wander through the land distressed and hungry. When they get hungry, they will be enraged, and curse their king and their God, as they turn their faces upwar= d.

²² They will = look to the earth, and see only distress and darkness, gloom and anguish; they w= ill be driven away into the darkness.

¹ But there = will be no gloom to her who was in anguish. In the former times he treated the l= and of Zebulun and Naphtali with contempt, but in the latter time he will make = glorious Galilee of the nations, from the way of the sea to the region beyond the Jordan.

² The people= who walk in darkness have seen a great light;

&nb= sp; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,

³ You have multiplied the nation;

&nb= sp; they joy before you like the joy during harvest,

⁴ For the yo= ke of their oppression,

&nb= sp; the rod of their oppressor,

you have bro= ken as in the day of Midian's defeat.

⁵ For every = boot of the marching warriors,

&nb= sp; and every garment drenched in blood,

&nb= sp; = will be for burning, fuel for the fire.

⁶ For unto u= s a child is born,

&nb= sp; unto us a son is given,

and the gove= rnment will be upon his shoulders:

and his name= will be called Wonderful Counselor,

&nb= sp; Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

⁷ Of the increase of his government

&nb= sp; and of peace there will be no end.

He will rule= on the throne of David,

&nb= sp; and over his kingdom,

to establish it, <= o:p>

&nb= sp; and to uphold it with justice

&nb= sp; = and with righteousness from this time forth forever.

The zeal of = the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

⁸ The Lord sent a word against Jacob, =

&nb= sp; and it has fallen on Israel.

⁹ All the pe= ople will know it,

&nb= sp; Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,

&nb= sp; = who in pride and in arrogance of heart, say,

¹⁰ "The bricks have fallen,

&nb= sp; but we will rebuild with carefully crafted stone;

the sy= camores are cut down,

&nb= sp; but we will replace them with cedars."

¹¹ Therefore = the LORD has raised their adversaries against them,

&nb= sp; and has stirred up his enemies,

¹² Aram on the east,

&nb= sp; and the Philistines on the west;

they will gobble= up Israel with an open mouth.

Even after all thi= s, his anger is not turned away,

&nb= sp; but his hand is stretched out still.

¹³ Yet the pe= ople have not turned to him who struck them,

&nb= sp; neither have they sought the LORD of hosts.

¹⁴ Therefore = the LORD will cut off from Israel

&nb= sp; head and tail,

&nb= sp; = palm branch and reed in just one day.

¹⁵ The elder = and the dignitaries, are the head;

the prophets= who teach lies, are the tail.

¹⁶ For those = who lead this people have led them astray;

&nb= sp; those who are led by them are destroyed.

¹⁷ Therefore = the Lord is not pleased with their young men,

&nb= sp; nor will he have compassion on their orphans and widows;

for everyone= is godless and an evildoer,

&nb= sp; and every mouth speaks folly.

Even after a= ll this, his anger is not turned away,

&nb= sp; but his hand is stretched out still.

¹⁸ For wicked= ness burns like fire;

&nb= sp; it devours the briers and thorns;

it also burns the thickets of the forest,

&nb= sp; so that they go up in smoke.

¹⁹ Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts the land is burnt up

&nb= sp; and the people are like the fuel for the fire;

&nb= sp; = no one spares even his brother.

²⁰ They devou= red on the right, but were still hungry;

&nb= sp; he ate on the left, but they were not be satisfied.

They w= ill all eat the flesh of their own children.

²¹ Manasseh devours Ephraim,

&nb= sp; and Ephraim, Manasseh;

= both will fight against Judah.

Even after a= ll this, his anger is not turned away,

&nb= sp; but his hand is stretched out still.

&nb= sp; and to the writers who write oppressive laws;

² to turn as= ide the needy from justice,

³ What will = you do in the day of punishment,

&nb= sp; when devastation comes from far away?

To whom will= you flee for help?

⁴ Nothing is left but to huddle down with the prisoners,

⁵ "Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger= ,

&nb= sp; the club in their hands is my rage!

⁶ I am sendi= ng him against a godless nation,

&nb= sp; and against the people of my wrath.

I will give = him an order,

to t= ake the spoil,

&nb= sp; to seize the plunder,

&nb= sp; and to stomp them down

&nb= sp; like the mud in the streets.

⁷ Yet this is not what he intends,

&nb= sp; nor is this what his heart is planning;

it is in his heart= to destroy,

&nb= sp; and to cut off many nations.

⁸ For he boa= sts, "Are not my princes all kings?"

⁹ Is not Cal= no like Carchemish?

&nb= sp; Is not Hamath like Arpad?

&nb= sp; Is not Samaria like Damascus?

¹⁰ As my hand= has reached the kingdoms of the idols,

&nb= sp; whose images excel those of Jerusalem and of Samaria,

¹¹ shall I no= t do to Jerusalem and her idols,

&nb= sp; exactly as I have done to Samaria and her idols?"

¹² When the Lord has finished his whole work= on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem,

he will say,

&nb= sp; "I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria,

&nb= sp; = and the haughty of look of his eyes.

¹³ For he say= s, 'By the strength of my hand I have done it,

&nb= sp; and by my wisdom;

for I have understanding.

I have removed the boundaries of the peoples,

&nb= sp; and have robbed their treasures,

and li= ke a powerful conqueror I have brought down

&nb= sp; those who sat on thrones.

¹⁴ My hand has found the riches of the peoples

&nb= sp; like a bird's nest;

like one gathers e= ggs that are abandoned,

&nb= sp; I have gathered = all the earth.

There was no= t one that flapped a wing,

&nb= sp; or that opened its mouth, or chirped.'"

¹⁵ Does the axe boast against the one who wi= elds it?

&nb= sp; Does the saw extol itself over the one who saws with it?

As if a rod = should wave the one who lifts it up,

&nb= sp; or as if a staff should lift up the one not made of wood.

¹⁶ Therefore = the sovereign LORD of hosts

&nb= sp; will send among his burly warriors emaciation;

his glory wi= ll be incinerated like the burning of fire.

¹⁷ The light = of Israel will be for a fire,

&nb= sp; and his Holy One for a flame.

It will burn= and devour in just one day

&nb= sp; his thorns and his briers.

¹⁸ He will consume the grandeur of his forest,

&nb= sp; and his fruitful field,

&= nbsp; bo= th body and soul.

It wil= l be like when a sick person wastes away.

¹⁹ There will= be so few surviving trees in his forest,

&nb= sp; that even a child could write them down.

²⁰ In that day the remnant of Israel, <= /o:p>

&nb= sp; and those who survive from the house of Jacob,

will no long= er depend on the one who struck them,

&nb= sp; but they will rely on the LORD,

&nb= sp; = the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

²¹ A remnant = will return,

&nb= sp; the remnant of Jacob to the mighty God.

²² For though= your people, Israel,

&nb= sp; = be as the sand of the sea,
&= nbsp; only a remnant of them will ret= urn;

a destruction is decreed,

&nb= sp; overflowing with righteousness.

²³ For the sovereign LORD of hosts

&nb= sp; will execute complete destruction,

&= nbsp; in the midst of the whole land.

²⁴ Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD= of hosts says,

&nb= sp; "O my people who live in Zion,

do not= be afraid of the Assyrian,

&nb= sp; though he strikes you with the rod,

&nb= sp; and lifts up his club against you,

&nb= sp; = just as Egypt did.

²⁵ For in a f= ew moments my fury will be over,

&nb= sp; then my anger will be directed to their destruction.

²⁶ The LORD of hosts will beat them with a whip,

&nb= sp; just like he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb.

He will lift= his rod over the sea,

&nb= sp; just as he did in Egypt.

²⁷ In that day his burden will be removed from off your shoulder,

&nb= sp; and his yoke from off your neck,

&nb= sp; and the yoke will be broken because you will be so brawny.

²⁸ He has come to Aiath; <= /p>

&nb= sp; he has passed through Migron;

&nb= sp; = at Michmash he stores his baggage.

²⁹ They are g= one over the pass;

&nb= sp; they have taken up their lodging at Geba;

Ramah trembl= es;

&nb= sp; Gibeah of Saul has fled.

³⁰ Shriek, O daughter of Gallim!

&nb= sp; Listen, O Laishah!

&nb= sp; = O poor Anathoth!

³¹ Madmenah f= lees;

&nb= sp; the inhabitants of Gebim run for cover.

³² This very = day he will halt at Nob;

&nb= sp; he shakes his fist at the mount of the daughter of Zion,

&nb= sp; = the hill of Jerusalem.

³³ Look, the sovereign LORD of hosts, <= /o:p>

&nb= sp; will lop off the boughs with an awful crash.

The tallest = trees will be cut down,

&nb= sp; and the lofty brought low.

³⁴ He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,

&nb= sp; and Lebanon in its majesty will fall.

¹ There will= grow up a shoot out of the stump of Jesse,

&nb= sp; and a branch out of his roots will bear fruit.

² The Spirit= of the LORD will rest upon him,

&nb= sp; the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

&nb= sp; the Spirit of counsel and might,

&nb= sp; the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

³ His deligh= t will be in the fear of the LORD.

&nb= sp; He will not judge after the sight of his eyes,

&nb= sp; neither decide after the hearing of his ears.

⁴ But he will judge the poor with righteousness,

&nb= sp; and decide for the oppressed of the earth with equity.

He will strike the= earth with the rod of his mouth;

&nb= sp; with the breath of his lips, he will kill the wicked.

⁵ Righteousn= ess will be the belt around his hips,

&nb= sp; and faithfulness the belt around his waist.

⁶ The wolf w= ill dwell with the lamb,

&nb= sp; and the leopard will lie down with the young goat;

the calf, the young lion, and the fattened cow

&nb= sp; = will lie down together;

and a = little child will lead them.

⁷ The cow and the bear will graze together;

&nb= sp; their young ones will lie down together;

= the lion will eat straw like an ox.

⁸ The nursing child will play near the hole of the asp,

&nb= sp; and the weaned child will put his hand into the viper's hole.=

⁹ They will = not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain;

&nb= sp; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD

&nb= sp; = as the waters cover the sea.

¹⁰ In that day the root of Jesse will be raised for a sign of the peoples;

&nb= sp; the nations will seek guidance from him;

&nb= sp; = his resting place will be glorious.

¹¹ In that day the Lord will set his hand again the second time

&nb= sp; to recover the remnant of his people that remains,

&nb= sp; from Assyria and from Egypt,

from Pathros and from Cush,

&nb= sp; from Elam, and from Shinar,

&nb= sp; from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

¹² Then he wi= ll set up a signal flag for the nations,

&nb= sp; and will assemble the outcasts of Israel,

&nb= sp; and gather together the dispersed of Judah

&nb= sp; = from the four corners of the earth.

¹³ The jealou= sy of Ephraim will depart;

&nb= sp; those hostile to Judah will be cut off.

Ephrai= m will not be jealous of Judah,

&nb= sp; and Judah will not be hostile to Ephraim.

¹⁴ They will = swoop down on the shoulder of the Philistines on the west;

&nb= sp; together they will plunder the people of the east.

They will put forth their hand on Edom and Moab,

&nb= sp; and the Ammonites will obey them.

¹⁵ The LORD w= ill divide the gulf of the Egyptian sea;

&nb= sp; with his scorching wind he will wave his hand

&nb= sp; = over the Euphrates River.

= He will split it up into seven streams,

&nb= sp; and enable people to cross over in sandals.

¹⁶ There will= be a highway for the remnant of his people

&nb= sp; that remain from Assyria,

like there w= as for Israel in the day

&nb= sp; that they came up out of the land of Egypt.
